Explore Haunted Oahu: Another Side of Paradise

If you’re planning a trip to Oahu, I recommend exploring more than just its sunny beaches and scenic hikes!

Before I moved to Oahu, I had no idea what a spooky underbelly the island had! I don’t think it was until I’d been here for 4 or 5 years that I discovered how widespread the belief in ethereal presences is.

For example, after working on Oahu for a couple of years, I realized that a Kahu blessing of structures and businesses is a standard practice. New ones, or existing ones if it’s felt to be necessary.

In Hawaiian culture, the practice of blessing new and existing structures is deeply rooted in spirituality and respect for the land. It serves both to cleanse spaces of negative energies and to honour ancestral ties and the land itself.

And in fact, Oahu has a fascinating history full of ghost stories and haunted locations. The culture of the Hawaiian people is deeply rooted in traditional lore and time-honoured beliefs.

While you’re here, once the sun goes down in paradise, get to know another side of it. There are plenty of options when it comes to seeing night march locations and haunted halls.

The Haunted History of Oahu

As idyllic as the island’s beaches and sunsets are, it’s just as rich in ghost stories and supernatural sites. They’re all intricately woven with local folklore and important historical events.

Oahu’s haunted locations are connected to ancient burials. They’re also linked to sacred sites known as heiau, historic battlefields, the residences of high-ranking chiefs (ali‘i), and the paths tread by Night Marchers.

• One intriguing local belief prohibits carrying pork over the Pali Highway. This is rooted in a legendary pact between Pele, the volcano goddess, and Kamapua’a, a demi-god represented by a pig.

This lore reflects the island’s deep spiritual connections. There are presumed to be supernatural repercussions when such ancient pacts are broken.

• The Night Marchers, ancient Hawaiian warrior spirits, are another cornerstone of Oahu’s supernatural lore. Their presence emphasizes the sacredness of the land they traverse.

Said to walk various parts of the island, they’re especially active at sites like the Nu’uanu Pali Lookout – the scene of a 1795 battle where many Hawaiian warriors met their demise.

These spirits – the Night Marchers – are both respected and feared. If you should see them, local traditions require avoiding direct eye contact to escape their wrath.

• Manoa Falls Trail is another ghostly spot said to be haunted by Night Marchers. According to some tales, the path of the Night Marchers includes the area around Manoa Falls Trail.

If you find yourself in the path of the Night Marchers, the protocol is to lie flat on the ground, face down. This act of submission shows respect and acknowledges their power and status. It’s believed that this posture can save a person from harm.

• At the Iolani Palace, another spectral resident reputedly lingers – Queen Lili’uokalani. Legend has it her spirit still oversees her former royal residence.

This is possibly due to her unjust treatment and imprisonment inside its walls. The palace’s grand architecture now doubles as a backdrop for tales of her lingering spirit.
