If you want to get a real taste of Hawaiian culture while you’re here, I recommend stopping by the Kalakaua Festival. It happens every November, and it’s one I always try to be at.
Held along Kalakaua Avenue in the heart of Waikiki, this event celebrates all that makes Oahu special. You’ll find everything from local music and hula dancing to traditional foods and handmade crafts.
It’s a great way to surround yourself with island spirit and enjoy the energetic atmosphere of one of Oahu’s most famous streets.
When Is the Kalakaua Festival?
The Kalakaua Festival usually takes place every year in November. The date changes each year, but look for it on a Saturday, from 4pm to 10pm.
The event takes place on Kalakaua Avenue, the main street running through Waikiki. It’s right in the heart of the action, so odds are you’ll be staying somewhere close by.
The street is closed to traffic for several blocks, there are street performers, vendors, and food stalls. And the street is lined with its collection of high-end and kitschy Hawaiian shops. It’s Waikiki on steroids!
What to Expect at the Festival
Kalakaua Avenue is a busy, buzzing street on a normal day, and the festival takes it over the top. It’s a fun and colourful celebration of Hawaiian culture.
You’ll get to see traditional hula dancers and local musicians performing. Plus, there’s live entertainment that lets you see Oahu’s modern side.
On top of all that are the local artists who set up shop to display their work. This is a great spot to pick up some souvenirs to remember your trip.
And when it comes to food, you’ll find plenty of island favourites, from poke and shave ice to plate lunches. There’s so much amazing food on the island!
Local Tips for Enjoying the Kalakaua Festival
- Best Time of Day: If you prefer smaller crowds, try heading to the festival soon after it starts. After-dark performances tend to be the most popular, so be prepared for larger crowds if you want to stay for those.
- Parking: Finding parking in Waikiki is always tricky, especially with a big event like this one. If you aren’t staying in the area and can’t walk, there are parking garages nearby.
You can try the Waikiki Banyan and International Market Place garages, but they can fill up fast and get pricey. I recommend using public transportation, Uber or a taxi.
- Bring a reusable shopping bag or small backpack along: If you want to pick up any souvenirs, make sure you have something to carry them in.
Things to Do Around the Kalakaua Festival
The Kalakaua Festival takes right in the centre of Waikiki, so there’s plenty to see and do nearby. If you’re in the mood for some beach time, Waikiki Beach is just a short walk away.
You can also check out Kapiolani Park or the Honolulu Zoo if you’re looking for some outdoor activities. Ala Moana Center is nearby, with lots of stores, restaurants, and entertainment.
The Kalakaua Festival is a great way to revel in the joy of Oahu. Make sure to mark this one on your calendar.
