Snorkel Gear – Oahu Essentials for Underwater Adventures
Do you want to know what snorkel gear you really need to enjoy the water on Oahu?
I called Oahu home for 9 years and spent a lot of that time in a mask and snorkel.
I had my collection of snorkel gear whittled down to just what I needed. Keep reading to find out what gear you should have for a great day in the water, without carrying around more than you need.
Snorkel Gear for Oahu
Snorkelling on Oahu is a terrific part of a tropical vacation on Oahu. There are a lot of places to choose from when it comes to where to check out the marine life.
The best way to enjoy them is to have what you need with you, so you can jump in without a lot of planning. Here’s what should be in your snorkel bag.
Snorkel and Mask – A comfortable, well-fitting snorkel and mask are important. This set is good quality, with a silicone skirt that seals out water without cutting into your face.
Plus the snorkel has a one-way purge valve to help keep water out. FIND IT ON AMAZON
Snorkel and Mask for Kids – a little face needs a smaller mask. This one is rated 4.6/ 5 on Amazon and will fit most kids between 5 and 15 years.
It comes with a snorkel suitable for small mouths, and fins that are adjustable, so they’ll fit for a few years.

Fins – Fins help you swim more efficiently and cover larger areas without getting too tired.
You can choose between short and long fins. Short fins are best for maneuverability and are easier to pack. These ones are flexible, have an adjustable open heel, and a 4.5/ 5 rating. They come in kids’ sizes, too.

Rash Guard – A rash guard or not only protects you from the sun. It also prevents coral scrapes and are a cool option if you prefer to be a little more covered up.
This is one of my favourites and has a 4.5/ 5 rating.
These days it’s easy to find rash guards with a UPF 50+ rating. Perfect for spending long sunny days in the water.
This is especially important for kids.

Waterproof Phone Case – If you want to have your phone with you, this case fits around your arm and will keep it safe in the water. Bonus, the touch screen works inside the case.
This is 100% waterproof up to depths of 20m. Get it with or without a headphone jack. You can use it for your keys, etc. too. FIND THIS ON AMAZON
Marine Life Identification Guide – This is optional, but it’s fun to be able to identify the fish and coral you see.
Sandproof Blanket – Also optional. This is the same one I have, and I love it for the beach. It’s made of ripstop nylon that’s very quick drying and sand just shakes right off. It also packs up nice and small.
It comes with stakes to keep the corners down in the breeze. But you should put these in your carry-on. There are pockets, too, on the corners. Filling them with sand works great to keep them on the ground.
